Friday 26 July

Mapplethorpe Late Night

Where: Melkweg, Lijnbaansgracht 234A, 1017 PH

As one of the worlds most controversial photographers, Robert Mapplethorpe’s transgressive work surrounding sexuality and eroticism made him an icon of gay culture. From his 1970s collection on the New York S&M scene, to his iconic nudes and celebrity portraits, Robert constantly pushed boundaries, opened minds and created conversation on sexuality and how it is represented. In light of Pride month and his incredible influence on gay culture, Melkweg are hosting an exhibition called Eyes on Robert, showcasing contemporary photographers’ reinterpretations of his work. To kick off the Pride Parties this weekend, Melkweg are giving you the opportunity to get to know the man behind the camera… who was often even more controversial than his work. On Friday night Melkweg will be screening two films on the gay icon and artist, as the Eyes on Robert Exhibition space is converted into a beanbag & beer filled cinema. To give you even more insight on this legend, there will be an introductory talk on the representation of homosexualtiy in contemporary visual culture. Before you celebrate Pride this month, come and learn about one of the many icons who helped us get to where we are today!

Saturday 27 July

Pride Walk

Where: The Homomonument, Westermarkt, 1016 DV

It’s official - Pride is upon us! Each year Pride Amsterdam kicks off with the traditional Pride Walk, which has the incredibly important purpose of drawing attention and showing support to LGBTI+ communities in countries where homosexuality is still considered a crime. Hundreds of rainbow coloured people will be carrying the flags of these countries, whilst also showcasing the diversity of Amsterdam’s own LGBTI+ community. This is a walk full of love, colour and acceptance, as we reflect not only on how far we have come as a society, but also on how far we still have to go.

Pride Park - Opening Party

Where: Vondelpark

Come together to celebrate all things L O V E in the sunshine this Saturday, at the official opening party of Pride in Vondelpark, aka the Park of Love! Aside from the stellar line up of DJs and musicians, there will be a whole host of other activities for you to get around; the Rainbow Market, sports games, and our favourite — the Pride Vogue Ball by the epic House of Vineyard collective! If you’ve never been to a vogue ball, you are missing out on something truly special. In the name of Pride, I urge you to get involved! Just remember to keep serving face ;)

Sunday 28 July

Milkshake Festival

If there’s one other milkshake to rival ours at the Lost Lounge… it could only ever be the ICONIC Milkshake Festival. You might be tempted to write this off as just another festival, but trust us when we say that this is a festival like no other. It’s an annual collaboration between two of Amsterdam’s hottest clubs - Paradiso & AIR, and in the spirit of Pride it’s all about freedom, respect, acceptance and of course, LOVE! At Milkshake you’ll find the craziest costumes, incredible drag acts, world-class DJs next to trippy underground music, performing arts, freedom and frivolity! What you won’t be able to find — judgement. Milkshake is all about being whoever you want to be. This year the annual festival of fun runs from Saturday 27 to Sunday 28 July. If you miss the House of Vineyard Vogue Ball on Saturday… make sure you catch their performance at Milkshake on Sunday!
