Be Amazed In A World Full Of Lights : Amsterdam Light Festival

The Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light festival in the center of Amterdam since December 2012. Generally it starts in the months of December and ends in January. During the festival period, specially designed light artworks and installations made by international designers and architects are exhibited in the city.

Thanks to the Amsterdam Light Festival the winter season will be a lot brighter. The festival idea was born as an idea to treat residents and visitors of the city with more positivity during the dark winter days. Besides serving the visitors, the festival is also a great platform for talented light artists to show their work.

This year the seventh edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival will take place from November 29, 2018 to January 20, 2019. This festival is a must-see when visiting Amsterdam in these months. The best way to see this open-light museum is in style with a cruise along or even under the most fantastic light sculptures and projections. Be enchanted by all the lights, and enjoy this wonderful event either by boat or by walking through the city center. The historic city center of Amsterdam will be the atmospheric decor of the international light art festival for more than 50 days. The festival brings a number of special surprises, make sure you’re ready for this.

More than 40 artworks and installations by national and international artists, designers and architects will illuminate the city center of Amsterdam. This year, more than 2,500 artists from 98 different countries showed interest in participating. This led to entries from 800 artists from more than 45 countries, from which more than 35 concepts were selected. We are looking forward to see all the incredible art works in our favorite city.

Top activities during Amsterdam Light Festival:

• Take a boat and enjoy a unique view of Amsterdam from the perspective of its famous waterways. Several canal tour companies will offer Water Colors Cruises, displaying the artwork along, in and above the Amstel and operating daily from 29 November 2018 to 20 January 2019 from 17.00 to 23.00.

 

• Follow Illuminade, the Amsterdam Light Festival walking route. The walking route Illuminade will take you past 20 light artworks in the beautiful neighbourhoods of Amsterdam.  The Illuminade, the walking route of Amsterdam Light Festival, is free of charge. 

• Take a bike tour. Everyday of the week, Different bike companies take you on a 2-hour bicycle tour, passing by both the boat and walking routes. The bilingual guides will show and tell you everything there is to know about the light artworks. Check with the company you choose where the tour starts from.
